Utility costs are just going up. Electricity has hit skyrocketing levels to the point where people are going without heat during the winter or deciding between a shower or cooking their meal. It’s hard for everyone out there, and it’s shown everyone one key thing – that the current electricity network is unsustainable and doomed in the long run. Everyone needs to divest from the energy network as much as possible, either by using less or sourcing their own electricity or water.

Ultimate Guide to Saving on Your Utilities: Top Actionable Tips to Lower Your Bills

Doing this can help you save on your utilities substantially, and with prices just rising and fluctuating, it can give you the peace of mind you need to raise a family. Some of the changes in this list are perfect for everyone as they’re budget-friendly. Other options do require an upfront investment but can help you and your family in the long run.

Either way, everyone needs to make changes to jump off this nightmare of rising costs. If you’re more than ready to jump ship and find your own raft, then this guide is for you:

Invest in a Solar Power System

One of the best ways to divest from the electric grid is to have your own power source. Most homes, so long as they have a roof, are eligible for solar panels. Today these panels are more efficient than ever and work to capture electricity from the power of the sun, even in cloudy conditions. If you live in a sunny area, of course, you’ll get more bang for your buck.

Now, you can sell unused electricity back to the grid but know you’ll only get a fraction of the cost for your electricity than what you pay for it from the same grid. You’ll usually pay up to four times as much to take electricity from the grid in comparison to what you can sell your own electricity back.

That means it’s more economical to not just have solar panels but also a way to store unused power for later use (like at night). To do this, you’ll need battery storage. Follow this battery storage guide to learn everything you’ll need to know when it comes to choosing a battery, installing it, using it, and maintaining it.

Use Water-Saving Taps

Water is another cost that everyone should all work on reducing by reusing. There are a few key ways you can do this, and it starts at your taps. Change out your taps to a water-efficient alternative. These break up the stream of water to give you greater coverage while using less water overall. This is a very simple but effective way to reuse your water and spend less overall.

The second tip is to install some sort of water recapture system. A rudimentary option is to install a rain barrel in your backyard and use that to water your plants. You can alternatively set up a system where you use your shower wastewater to water your plants, and so on. You’ll need to use the right type of soap so that you don’t end up killing your plants, but if done right, you can divest from the water network and spend less each mother moving forward.

Use Landscaping and Smart Design

You can use evergreen bushes to reduce your heating bills. Place them along the outside wall that sees the most wind in winter to lower your costs substantially. For summer, you can install a lattice over your windows. This forces any breeze through faster, which works to cool your home for less naturally.

Take Advantage of Your Night Rates

If you’re on a tariff that includes a lower night rate, take advantage of it. Wash your clothes overnight. Put the dishwasher on overnight. Slow-cook tomorrow’s meal in your slow cooker overnight. There are so many ways that you can do things overnight that will improve your tomorrow while also helping you save.
