Expert Tips for Winning Escape Room Games

Escape rooms are a thrilling mix of mystery, strategy, and teamwork—like stepping into a real-life puzzle where your wits are the only way out. While the experience itself is exciting, the real fun lies in cracking the codes, solving the clues, and beating the clock. Winning feels amazing, and with the right approach, your chances can skyrocket escape room games.

We’ve compiled a set of valuable tips drawn from the best escape games in Los Angeles as well as personal experience. Some might seem like common sense, while others could completely transform how you play—like flipping on the light in a dark room.

Whether you’re a seasoned escaper or a first timer, these tips will help you and your team escape faster, smarter, and with a lot more fun.

1. Assemble a Balanced Team

While it’s tempting to gather as many friends as possible, bigger isn’t always better. A larger team can bring more ideas to the table, but too many people in a small room can quickly lead to chaos and confusion. Ideally, stick with 4–6 players to maintain a manageable dynamic while maximizing collaboration.

Also, aim for a diverse mix—some people might be good at logic puzzles, others at spotting visual clues, while some excel at pattern recognition. A well-rounded team is a winning team.

2. Communicate and Collaborate

Teamwork is the heartbeat of every successful escape. Keep an open line of communication throughout the game. Share discoveries, shout out anything unusual you find, and don’t be afraid to swap puzzles. If you’ve hit a wall on a challenge, let someone else give it a go—sometimes a fresh set of eyes is all you need.

And just as important: listen. A quiet teammate might just hold the key to the next breakthrough.

3. Divide and Conquer

To avoid duplication of effort and keep things efficient, assign roles early on. Have someone focused on searching, another person tracking found clues or codes, and someone else trying to solve puzzles. Tailor these roles to each person’s strengths.

This also helps prevent the whole group from clustering around a single puzzle, which often leads to wasted time and frustration.

4. Stay Organized

Organization is essential. Create a central area for all found items so everyone can see what’s been discovered. Group related objects together—if several keys or pieces of paper look connected, keep them in the same spot. This minimizes backtracking and helps ensure no clues are overlooked.

Keeping the room tidy also helps reduce the visual clutter, making it easier to notice new details.

5. Search Thoroughly—but Respectfully

Leave no stone unturned. Look inside books, under furniture, behind wall panels, and in the most unlikely of places. Clues can be cleverly hidden in plain sight or tucked away in obscure corners. That said, always be gentle. Don’t force locks or damage the props—escape rooms are designed to be solved without breaking anything.

Remember: it’s a game, not a demolition project.

6. Know When to Ask for Hints

Don’t let your pride slow your progress. If you’re stuck for too long, it’s okay to ask for help. Game masters are there to guide you—not to give away the solution, but to nudge you in the right direction.

Before the game starts, make sure you understand the rules about hint usage. Some rooms limit the number of hints; others might add time penalties. Either way, hints can be a lifeline when the clock is ticking.

7. Avoid Alcohol Before You Play

As tempting as it may be to pre-game before a night out, avoid entering an escape room under the influence. Alcohol impairs your judgment, slows your reaction time, and makes communication harder. You’ll need all your focus, coordination, and sharp thinking to succeed. Save the drinks for the celebration afterward!

8. Keep Track of Time

Most escape rooms won’t let you bring your phone inside, and wall clocks might not always be visible. Wearing a wristwatch can help you monitor how much time is left, so you can pace yourselves accordingly. Some rooms offer periodic time updates, but keeping track independently gives you a strategic edge.

Ready, Set, Escape!

Escape rooms are as much about the journey as they are about the destination. Whether you’re solving your first mystery or chasing your personal best time, these tips can make your next experience smoother, more enjoyable, and more successful.

So, rally your team, sharpen your senses, and step into the game with confidence—you’ve got everything it takes to make your great escape!
